留学生リリアンの「おやつって何ですか？」が面白かった。このコラムを読むと日本人でも知らない事がたくさんあってそれを気付かされる。おやつの意味を語源から説明できる人はそういないんじゃないかな。

Oyatsu, which can be anything from sweets to rice balls, are snacks eaten between meals, normally at around 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

O is an honorific prefix and yatsu means "eight." The word is said to have derived from a custom from the Edo Period, when commoners typically are two meals a day.
