怪談 Summer ghost story
The tradition stems from Buddhist beliefs about the Bon Period, the holiday in mid-August when the spirits of our ancestors return from the land of the dead to pay us a visit.
Bon was also thought to be a time when we see spirits that have some unfinished business in the world of the living.
In the Edo Period, many summer plays featured ghosts and their quests to move onto the next world. The plays were like prayers to heal the departed.

This is an Unadon: butterfly-filleted unagi on rice, drenched in a thick sweet sauce made from soy sauce.
People eat unadon because of Unagi Day.
